Picture Perfect

Synopsis:
Fashion design major Cat Mitchell has a closet full of gorgeous clothes - and not a single thing fits. After two years of runway modeling for easy cash, an accident shattered her lower leg bone and her self-esteem in just one swift fall. Ten months of no exercise, prescription steroids, comfort eating and yoga pants meant returning to campus as a size twelve instead of her former size two.

When her gorgeous long-time friend with benefits sees her for the first time after her accident and snubs her in front of all her friends, Cat’s self-image hits rock bottom. Her sorority sisters all insist that she looks gorgeous, but all Cat sees is the roll of her stomach when she sits down, or the dimpling at the back of her thighs that wasn't there last year. Cat’s therapist prescribes something radical to stop the downward spiral - nude modeling for a nearby college's human form drawing classes.

When Cat faces her fears and bares it all for the class, she realizes that she's posing naked in front the most gorgeous, buffest guy she's ever seen in her life. He asks her out after the class, and after one steamy night together, Cat's absolutely smitten.

Nate’s pretty close to perfect – he takes Cat rock climbing when he discovers that it makes her feel strong and becomes a great chef after he learns that the perfect pesto sauce makes her swoon. Cat starts to feel like her old self again - confident and beautiful - as long as Nate's around. Even when he discourages her from entering the Real Woman Project, a design competition for plus-sized apparel, she reasons that he's just trying to prevent old body image wounds from splitting wide open again.

But when Cat goes home with Nate for Thanksgiving, she discovers something shocking from his recent past that proves that he hasn’t always been so encouraging of women of all shapes and sizes. Cat has no idea what to think, but she does know one thing - this might destroy their relationship before it's even had a chance to get off the ground.

Before Cat can figure out whether the real Nate is the sensitive, adoring guy she fell in love with, or an undercover asshole, she'll have to finally feel comfortable in her own skin - even if it means leaving him forever.

(This book contains sex and adult language.)

PICTURE PERFECT by Alessandra Thomas is a story about Cat, a college junior and and model who, after recovering from a horse riding accident and horrible injury, is left 60 lbs heavier and feeling insecure and out of place in her old life. After having a difficult time adjusting to her new size and feelings of depression, her therapist suggests that she pose nude for a human form class at a nearby college. This is where she meets Nate, an aspiring architect, who soon becomes the perfect person to finally make her see how beautiful she is, no matter what size she wears. There were several moments in book when I was afraid that she was using Nate as a crutch, which her therapist does point out to her, but then there were other times when their relationship just seemed normal and supportive, so I went back and forth with that a little. But as perfect as Nate seemed, he turned out to have an interesting past and some issues with body image as well. And Cat's perception of sweet, perfect Nate came crashing down big time. This little shocker definitely threw me for a loop and I was just as surprised and devastated as Cat to find out about Nate's not so "supportive" past.

As a bigger girl myself, I found Cat's thoughts, feelings of discomfort, and insecurities about her size to be very believable, although she really isn't that big at all. At her heaviest, she is actually at a normal, healthy weight. But I suppose after being a stick thin model, 180 can probably seem huge. And when your whole life and profession is based on how good you look in teeny tiny clothes, judging your appearance above everything else and constantly comparing yourself to others, then I can definitely see how it would be difficult for her to find her place again after her accident and weight gain.

The supporting characters were pretty great. Cat's friend Joey was supportive of her during her entire journey and an extremely good friend to her, always there when she needed a shoulder to cry on or a good pep talk. Of course Nate was wonderful, even despite his drama there at the end, and I loved everything about him. I really wish this novel would have been a little bit longer, I found myself wanting to read more about these characters. Overall, I think Picture Perfect is a very realistic story about a young woman with self esteem issues learning to love her body and, most importantly, love herself despite her body. I truly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend this book! I can't wait to read more from this author! 4 STARS!

Alessandra Thomas on PICTURE PERFECT:

PICTURE PERFECT is about a girl who went from a size two to a size twelve in just under a year, and has some serious body image issues.

Yes. This book is about a girl who is size twelve and hates her body. She hates it so much that she tries to hide it, squeeze it into Spanx, cries over it, and emotionally eats up a storm. She hates it so much that she doesn’t believe her friends when they tell her how gorgeous she is. She hates it so much that she thinks no guy will ever want to have sex with her again.
Is Cat’s body image healthy? Lord in heaven, no.
Is Cat’s body image REAL? Yes.
Raise your hand if you’ve ever hated your body unreasonably.
Raise the other one if you’ve known someone who has hated her body unreasonably.
Yep. That’s what I thought. (Now do the Harlem Shake. You know you want to.)
Cat Mitchell, the protagonist of PICTURE PERFECT, is a freaking disaster. That’s what the book is about – her journey to becoming not-a-disaster. If Cat felt awesome about rolling out her new bangin bod all over campus, I’d be all, good for you, honey, but you make a damn boring story.
Are you a size twelve, and you love it? Good for you. Go on with your bad self. I’m a size sixteen, and while I have occasional moments of woe about a belly (or knee) roll, I’ll tell you right now, I’m freaking gorgeous. Not to mention that between the sheets, The Boy has nary a complaint. (*wink*)
Cat hates her size twelve body, but that doesn’t mean that I’m saying you should hate yours. In fact, what I want is for you to root for her to feel as good about herself as you do.
I’m so happy you like your body the way it is. I like it too. I think you’re DEAD SEXY, in fact. So you can bet that Cat Mitchell is gonna feel dead sexy by the end of the book, too. And no, it’s not the way you think.

Consequences & Truth
by Aleatha Romig

★★★
Consequences (Consequences, #1)

Synopsis for Consequences:

Besieged by memories of a brutal abduction, Claire Nichols wakes in an unfamiliar bedroom, within a luxurious mansion. Her recollections have one common denominator, the man she just met, Anthony Rawlings.

Unbeknownst to Claire, for a very long time, she has been within Anthony’s sights. Many of the pivotal events in her life occurred, due to his sinister manipulation. Every action has a consequence, and his actions result in their chance meeting.

More than a psychological thriller, Consequences is a vivid story of one woman’s struggle to survive incomprehensible circumstances. Every aspect of her being suddenly depends upon the tall, wealthy, dark haired, dark eyed businessman. Anthony Rawlings is known to the world as prosperous, benevolent, and kind. Claire quickly learns that he can also be a menacing controlling captor.

With few options but concession, Claire attempts to earn her freedom, while enduring a hellish existence that truly appears perfect. Persevering tests and trials, she struggles to retain her pure Midwest values and beliefs. Encouraged by memories of a loving upbringing, she gains strength in the simplest of joys: solitude in nature and good in the face of evil.

His goal in sight, Anthony’s calculated agenda encounters an unforeseen detour. He becomes captivated by Claire’s beauty, resilience, and determination. The interaction of these two compelling characters instigates strong emotions: fear, anger, love, and lust. Claire and Anthony’s tumultuous journey flows into uncharted waters of intrigue and passion.

Utilizing vivid detail, this 167,000-word novel unfolds like a movie, before the eyes of its readers. From the opening criminal abduction, through twists and turns, to the unlikely romantic thrills, the suspense climaxes as Anthony’s motivation becomes evident.

Anthony and Claire must decide if they will stay true to one another, or allow preceding actions to result in justifiable Consequences

  Truth (Consequences, #2)

Synopsis for Truth:

Claire Nichols endured the CONSEQUENCES of Anthony Rawlings’ vendetta.

When she first arrived to his home, her goal was survival. Through strength and compartmentalization Claire captivated her captor. Her resilience in the face of his rule threatened Anthony’s well developed plan. Domination became desire and power turned to love.

Their passion and adoration in a world of opulence appeared perfect. Yet, reality was a roller coaster of emotion. Claire’s world teetered on the edge of sanity as Antony monitored her every move. When given the opportunity to flee, Claire drove away. A fateful decision which set a well laid plan into motion.

However, unbeknownst to either of them, there were others who saw past the perfect facade of Anthony Rawlings. There were others who saw the TRUTH. Conspiracy and unfulfilled promises result in an early prison release for Claire. Not just a release – a pardon. According to the law, her crime never happened!

Will it be that easy? Faced with freedom from her past... can Claire seize it? Can she build a new life, mend her broken spirit, become the woman she once was, and seek her own revenge? Or is it all a game? And does the game master have different plans?

How does Sophia Burke fit into the puzzle that is Tony and Claire? Will her presence affect the future of this well esteemed man? Can he dominate twice? Is that his goal?

TRUTH continues the tumultuous saga of CONSEQUENCES, introduces new players, and uncovers more intrigue. Aleatha Romig skillfully weaves past transgressions through current deception to create a fervent world of obsessed desire. In this reality can an all-consuming relationship survive?

When buried sins are discovered they threaten not only Tony and Claire’s future -- but their very lives! Will the TRUTH be revealed in time?

What. The. Fuck?!
I just want to scream!
Emotional mind fuck.
What did I just read?!

...Those are just a few of the things that stood out to me when I looked over the reviews for CONSEQUENCES. Hence the reason why I put off reading it for so long. I had no doubt it would be memorable, I could just never seem to be in the mood to put myself through what I knew was coming. That was until Cristina (Cristina's Book Reviews) said "Read it, it's worth it!" and I decided to just suck it up and get it. Well she was right, it was worth it. I won't even begin to try to go into anything about the plot because I would be sitting here all night-- I will say that all of those statements above were absolutely accurate! Aleatha Romig goes into a LOT of detail in this book and there were times when I felt like some things could have been omitted. But that's not to say that it deterred me from reading by any means. I still couldn't put it down, so it really wasn't even that big of an issue for me. This book pulled out so many different emotions, it made my head spin. The relationship between Tony and Claire was just... I can't even really explain how I feel about those two. Claire herself went back and forth with how she felt about Tony, and I was right there with her. There were times when I felt like he was becoming a good guy, but then BAM! He would do something terrible and unforgivable and I was right back to despising him. It was very exhausting, but i couldn't pull myself away. For me, it felt like this book was one very long build up to the last like 20% of the book. That's when all the shit hit the fan and my mind was just blown.

Then we have TRUTH. I was so excited for this one because I thought for sure Claire was going to stick it to him. And I couldn't wait for that to happen. As I said, I went back and forth with how I felt about Tony in Consequences, but by the end of the book I was back to hating him 100%. So I was ready for him to get a taste of his own medicine and for Claire to bring him down a notch. And she definitely had her moments. She finally shows just how smart she is and that she can stand up for herself. But of course Tony finds a way to always pull her back in. Things got a little tricky for me because there were so many times in this book that I was really rooting for Tony to change and be the person that I really, really hoped he could be. But then I would remember Claire's accident and hated myself for liking him even a little. As in the last book, I had a love/hate relationship with Tony. But by the end, I think I was ok with him. It's hard to tell. And at the risk of being completely random-- I love Harry, that is all (read it, you'll see!). The twists and turns were just crazy this time around and as much as I enjoyed Consequences, Truth is by far my favorite of the two. As is probably obvious in this review, my mind is still kind of spinning from these two books, so I'm not even sure what else to say about them! Definitely recommend this series and I so cannot wait for the third book, CONVICTED!

**RATING- 3 STARS for Consequences - 5 STARS for Truth**
