About the Author:
Georgeann Swiger earned her degree in journalism from West Virginia University, and then spent five years as an anchor/reporter at WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, WV. After having children, she left television news to be a stay at home mom. During that time, she discovered creative writing was more fun than writing about real life tragedy. Imagining interesting characters and having them come to life on the page is now her passion. When she’s not writing, she works as a substitute teacher. She lives in Reedsville, West Virginia with her husband, two kids, a beagle dog and a temperamental cat who tries to rule the house.

When I began writing Adorned, I had no idea how important meal times and food would end up being in the story. The meals the angels share are often prepared by Simon, an angel who loves to cook. He prefers to use the freshest ingredients and add his own little twist to everything he makes. In the spirit of autumn and Thanksgiving, Simon is sharing his pumpkin pie recipe. It’s made completely from scratch and has a heavenly flavor everyone will love.
Note: The crust recipe makes two shells. If you want to try it, may I suggest you do what I did and invite over your best friend to help you chop up a pumpkin, roll out two crusts and stir together two bowls of the delicious pumpkin filling. You’ll each get a pie and some quality BFF time.

Use 1 ½ pounds of fresh skin-on raw pumpkin to yield 2 cups mashed. Halve pumpkin. Scoop out seeds and stringy portions. Cut pumpkin into chunks and place in saucepan. Cover pumpkin with one inch of water and bring to boil. Simmer for 30 minutes or until pumpkin is tender. Drain. Cool. Remove peel. Return pumpkin to saucepan and mash with a potato masher.
2 2/3 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
½ c. warm water
1 tsp. vinegar
1/8 c. sugar
Combine water, vinegar, salt and sugar in measuring cup. Cut shortening into flour mixture until crumbly. Make well in flour mixture and add water. Combine with hands until dough forms a ball. Divide ball in half. Lightly flour surface and roll dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Gently roll dough around rolling pin and place it in the pie dish. Trim sides and flute edge or use a fork to press a pretty edge. TIP: The less you work the dough, the flakier the pastry will be.
Pumpkin Filling
2 c. mashed pumpkin
1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk
2 eggs, beaten
¾ c. packed brown sugar
½ tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp. nutmeg
½ tsp. ginger
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C)
  2. In large bowl, combine pumpkin, brown sugar, eggs, and spices. Stir in milk.
  3. Pour mixture into pie shell.
  4. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Continue baking at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until pie is no longer wiggly.
  5. Cool before serving.
  6. Store leftovers in the refrigerator.
