Review: Waiting on the Sidelines by Ginger Scott

Title: Waiting on the Sidelines
Author: Ginger Scott
Release date: April 15, 2013
My Rating: ★★★★★
Synopsis:
Nolan Lennox had things figured out. Named after a baseball legend, she enjoyed being the Tomboy, her closet filled with her brother’s hand-me-downs, cut-off jeans and soccer shorts. But when her first trip to high school results in a broken heart from the first boy to ever make her heart flutter and cruel words from an older girl she once thought a family friend, Nolan starts to question the very person she thought she was and wonders if her humble upbringing can compete with the afforded luxuries of her privileged peers.

Throughout the next four years, Nolan struggles to maintain herself throughout her path of discovery, learning just how cruel teenagers can be through the pressures of underage drinking, sexuality and class. And despite how life seems to continue to work against her, she still manages to listen to her heart, falling deeper and deeper for the guy the entire town adores, even if he only sees her as a friend. Can Nolan strike a compromise between her own integrity and the boy she loves? And can she make him notice her before it’s too late?

Reed Johnson came to Coolidge High School with a lot of fanfare. The son of a hometown football legend and the brother of a local football hero, Reed wore all the pressures of carrying a town without hope into the spotlight. Thankfully, he had the talent to back it up. But when he meets a girl who makes him think twice about exactly what being a hero means, he starts to wonder if following in his brother’s footsteps might be all wrong.

Nolan Lennox was everything that was opposite of expected. She didn’t flirt, she didn’t drink and she didn’t sleep around. Nothing about her was easy, but something about her made Reed want to try harder. Though she didn’t look the part, she seemed to be spending a lot of time in Reed’s thoughts, and he wondered if she could be the one who made it all worthwhile. But could Reed handle letting her down? And would breaking her heart break him beyond repair?

Waiting on the Sidelines explores young love to its fullest, exposing how real young heartbreak and passion is and how important it is to discover yourself and hold onto your own identity. The story follows two young characters as they deal with mature situations, including the prevalence of bullying and promiscuity in today’s high school setting. Ultimately, Waiting on the Sidelines is a story of hope, honesty and those powerful, first true loves—the ones worth holding onto at any cost.

Review

Thank you to the author for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
After being in a reading slump, where all stories started to sound the same, I was approached with this story for review. I was absolutely pulled in as soon as I started.  I consider this to be a more coming of age story, than YA. Nolan Lennox has always been a tomboy. She has never cared about clothes and looks until she encounters Reed Johnson during her freshman year of high school. He is the football star of the town.  As Nolan spends more time with Reed, she falls deeper and deeper for him. This beautifully written story takes place over several years.  We get to witness Nolan and Reed grow as individuals and experience young love in every way possible.

This deep and meaningful story is different than other books, because of its realness factor. Stereotyping and bullying is a huge problem in schools today, and the author shines light on this problem throughout the story. The character development was wonderful. You felt the electricity between Nolan and Reed in every scene. The love between these two teenagers is undeniable. It’s hard to make young love seem believeable, especially since they’re so young, but the author did a great job at this.

Overall, I would recommend this story to anyone looking for a different coming of age story. This is not your average young love story. The connection between Nolan and Reed is deep and heartfelt. I really wanted more of their story and hope that there is more Nolan and Reed in the future.

And maybe a lot of this going on...

Because, let's face it, we are total S.C. Stephens and D-Bag fangirls!

We're obsessed. It's probably unhealthy. Especially for Bianca. She finds a way to insert "SexyKK" into every imaginable conversation, whether it's relevant or not. But that's OK. Totally understandable. He is HOLY FREAKIN' SWOON-WORTHY.

Review: The Prelude (A Musical Interlude #1) by Kasonndra Leigh

Title: The Prelude (A Musical Interlude #1)
Author: Kasonndra Leigh
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Group: New Adult
Publication Date: Mar 31, 2013
My Rating: ★★★★
Synopsis:
After finishing design school six months ago, Erin Angelo left her tragic past behind in the States and started a new life in Milan, Italy. Burying the grief, silencing her demons, and living a life without any real attachments has worked well for her so far. But when Erin secures her first real job as a budding clothing designer, her controlled world is shaken to its core by the mysteriously sexy director of the local symphony.

Alek Dostov is a man who knows what he wants and how to get it. He’s successful, hot, the son of a millionaire, and women all over the world flock to see one of his performances. For Alek, Erin represents the ultimate challenge: sexy, smart, and unaffected by his charms…or so she thinks. Just like Erin, Alek avoids attachments that leave him emotionally vulnerable. But unlike Erin, his pursuit of all things pleasurable is ruthless.

Knowing how wary they both are concerning any kind of committed relationship, Alek finds a way to pursue Erin, satisfying the intense attraction between them without sacrificing the freedom they both enjoy. Sometimes the deepest passion brings out the darkest emotions. And Erin finds herself completely unprepared for the forbidden world of the young maestro and his truths and even his secrets, as she struggles to deal with her own.

Music, passion, betrayal and forbidden love spun together in one of the most romantic cities in the world.

This novel contains sexual situations and mature language. It is intended for an audience at 17+ years of age.

Review

I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Erin Angelo is a fashion designer in Milan. She is emotionally not available due to her past. Not the normal broken girl past. But a past that truly killed her spirit and the wanting to be emotionally close with anyone. Alek Dostov is a Russian maestro whom is into swinging. Yes swinging. Different read for me, but interesting! The two meet or collide when she is designing costumes for a production. Alek ends up hiring her. She sees this as a chance to put her fashion designs on the map. She will not date her boss. But, that’s what
they all say!

There was a bit of a chase between Erin and Alek. I enjoyed this because insta-love is just not my favorite.  Their flirtatious banter was quite entertaining. The story change when Alek’s past catches up to him. I think this interested me the most. I just wanted to know more. I am guessing this is left open for a continuation of the story. If so, I am interested!

I enjoyed that the story was written from both POVs. It gave us insight into both characters. While I expected this to be your typical New Adult novel, it was not. It was full of lies, betrayal, and suspense. I could not predict what would happen next. I enjoyed this couple and I look forward to any future continuation of their story. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a different new adult read.

Review: Beside Your Heart by Mary Whitney

Title: Beside Your Heart
Author: Mary Whitney
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Group: New Adult
Expected Publication: June 17th 2013
My Rating: ★★★★
Synopsis:

Late one night Nicki Johnson plays with emotional fire and Googles her high school love, only to find his name splashed across the British gossip columns. Back in his native England, Adam Kincaid is successful and dating a woman from an aristocratic family like his own. With a career in politics, Nicki’s no slouch, but she knows Adam is living a world away from her life.

Yet there was a time he was no farther than the next locker. Nicki will never forget their year together in high school—the year of her sister’s death, the year her mother checked out. Adam helped Nicki through suffocating grief, and she led him through a coming of age. Was it just high school, or was it something more?

Review

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Nicki Johnson is a senior in high school that has been through enough grief in her 17 years of living to last her a lifetime. She survived an accident that killed her sister and her mom was never the same. As broken as she is, she becomes drawn to British student, Adam Kincaid, a fellow classmate of hers. As time goes on neither can fight the inevitable and they fall for each other, hard. The story actually begins years later where Nicki googles her high school first love, Adam. I don’t want to give it away, but the book takes a surprising twist and gives a POV of their relationship I wasn’t expecting. Ok just a hint. Because I loved the story that much! Most stories of second chance romance gives us the present and TELLS us how they became to be. This story is different. We get to SEE how this love became to be.

It was not just insta-love for this couple. They actually fell in love, and it was really the most beautiful part of this story. Nicki has always felt alone in her grief, until Adam. Although in high school, Adam and Nicki were not your average high school couple. Everything was definitely not rainbows and butterflies. They helped each other deal with real issues. The first time they said I love you was one of my favorite parts of their story. I cannot help but calling them and this story beautiful. It’s the best word to describe everything Nicki and Adam.  You feel every emotion, their ups and downs, their uncertainty about the future. This book gets you so wrapped up in the characters you hold on to every word.

I absolutely adored the story of Nicki and Adam. I enjoyed every page, every moment of their story. The author has a style of writing that I really enjoyed. The flow of the story was slow paced, but I think this was on purpose. How many times have I read a story where it felt rushed? Not this one!  At the end of the story, I was just in tears. I was so overwhelmed with the love between Nicki and Adam. In the epilogue we are brought back to the future. The ending was just not enough for me. So much left unanswered. I truly hope that there is more to Nicki and Adam’s story.
