Synopsis:
Sixteen years is a long time to
wait for your true love to reappear, and, anyway, Nicki Johnson couldn’t wait
for the impossible to happen. Hard life lessons have taught her that fairy
tales are children’s stories, and fate is cruel. Burying her hopes, she’s spent
the last sixteen years focused and driven toward her career, and it’s landed
her with a job at the White House with a gem of a boyfriend. But when her high
school love, Adam Kincaid, walks into the White House as a BBC reporter,
Nicki’s world is thrown into turmoil as she relives their past. Adam has come
back for her, but has he arrived too late?
Review
I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The moment I finished book one, Beside Your Heart I was counting down
the days until the follow up. To say I was excited for the continuation of Adam
and Nicki’s story is an understatement! The connection between Adam and Nicki
is beyond words. Many times I have read stories where high school sweethearts
gets a second chance at love. Adam and Nicki were beyond high school
sweethearts, they were soul mates. Their story is so much more than your
typical high school students in love. This was not your average second chance
romance. It is much deeper than that.
It has been sixteen years since Adam and Nicki were last together. They
are now adults, working in Washington, D.C. working in politics and journalism.
The moment they see each other,
you could feel the chemistry coming off the pages. Adam and Nicki never
stopped loving each other, and it was apparent in their first encounter. The
problem? They are both involved with other people.
As much as I love the angst of love triangles, I will say that I am glad
that the author did not do that with these two individuals. I really enjoyed
Adam and Nicki as characters. They were mature in high school and the same as responsible
adults. Watching them fall in love
again, was breath taking. My heart went out to them both as they have spent so
many years apart. Because of their jobs and circumstances, the thought of being
together was something they both had to think about. Is true love worth risking
it all?
I enjoyed the author’s style of writing. This story was very well
written in that there was just enough detail in this story where the steam,
romance, and angst were well balanced throughout the story. I loved getting to
know Adam and Nicki as adults. They were such passionate teenagers and I
enjoyed getting to know them as adults. It made me feel a part of their
journey. Overall, I would recommend this story to anyone that believes in true
love. That true love withstands it all. I look forward to more of Adam and Nicki’s
story.
About the Author
Even before she graduated from law school, Mary Whitney knew
she wasn’t cut out to be a real lawyer. Drawn to politics, she’s spent her
career as an organizer, lobbyist, and nonprofit executive. Nothing piques her
interest more than a good political scandal or romance, and when she stumbled
upon writing, she put the two together. A born Midwesterner, naturalized Texan,
and transient resident of Washington, D.C., Mary now lives in Northern
California with her two daughters and real lawyer husband.
